SCDSB Trustee Peter Beacock arranged for Springwater Council to tour the almost finished addition and renovations to Elmvale District High School (EDHS) with Vice Principal Hillary Glass. The exciting addition will be used to create programs and services for students and the public to use during school hours, evenings and weekends. This $11 million project has had major support from the Simcoe County District School Board and additional funding has been raised through donations in a campaign organized by George Allen. Springwater Township will continue to contribute toward this project over the next 10 years. The double-sized gym allows for two sporting events to be played simultaneously. There are official retracting basketball nets, an electronic score board, pullout bleachers and a projector screen. The gym is bright, with an expanse of windows controlled with electric blinds.
The performance stage can be partitioned off for classes and practice by using curtains and sliding walls. It has stage lighting, an accessible elevator and other features.
The cafetorium has a large bank of retractable seating to create audience seating. When not in use for this purpose, the bright cafetorium area will afford students a space to hang out at tables and chairs.
The adjoining full kitchen and walk in freezers are almost completed. We are told that some of the school’s food preparation courses will be conducted in this area in the future.
Change rooms have been newly constructed, along with shower rooms, all being accessible.
A technology lab has been created with direct access to the renovated library.
A special separate area has been created and reserved for the new grade 7 and 8 students coming in fall 2019. These state-of-the-art classrooms each have sinks, shelves, white boards and projection equipment.
The goal is to have the first athletic games played in the gym starting in January 2019. The official opening is planned to occur in the spring and will be well-advertised in advance.
A donation recognition plaque will be created and mounted close to the addition entrance.
This is an excellent achievement as the result of the vision, hard work and support of many people in the Springwater community.
