County of Simcoe celebrates 175 years

Midhurst/ May 22, 2018 – 2018 marks the 175th Anniversary of the County of Simcoe. “Simcoe District” was established in 1843 by the Legislature of Upper Canada. The area has seen significant change and growth but the region has always been rich with culture and history.

The 175 celebration officially kicked-off during County Council on Tuesday, May 22 as members of County Council unveiled a commemorative 175 interactive icon that will travel to select locations throughout the County.

To commemorate this significant milestone, the County is hosting a number of public engagement activities:

The Simcoe County Museum and Archives are jointly creating a Simcoe County 175 Exhibit that will be on display from August 4 to Labour Day in the Museum’s main gallery. Admission to the Museum is by donation.

The County is hosting its second annual Simcoe Day event at the Simcoe County Museum on August 6, 2018. This event will include access to the Simcoe County Museum, a free BBQ lunch, a chance to meet the County’s paramedic and vehicle service fleet, and guided trail walks through the Museum Tract with a member of our Forestry Department.

The County is also hosting a social media campaign to commemorate the 175th Anniversary. Celebrate #simcoecounty175 by following @experiencesimcoecounty on Instagram and sharing selfies enjoying the best of Simcoe County for a chance to win a County Prize Pack. Everyone living/working/visiting in Simcoe County are invited to participate and share photos on Instagram @experiencesimcoecounty using #simcoecountyselfie and #simcoecounty175 and tag the location. The campaign runs May 22 to December 14, 2018 with monthly prize draws for most social media engagement.

County of Simcoe is composed of sixteen member municipalities and provides crucial public services to County residents in addition to providing paramedic and social services to the separated cities of Barrie and Orillia. Visit our website at simcoe.ca.
