Mayor Don Allen Update
Regional Government Review: Earlier this year, the Province of Ontario began its review of local and regional governments, including Simcoe County and its lower-tier municipalities. Simcoe County Council formed a task force of council members throughout the region to review questions and issues related to regionalization. From this task force, a letter on behalf of Simcoe County was sent to the provincial government to express Simcoe’s views and highlight potential efficiencies without loss of service offering. Some service areas to potentially review includeconservation authorities, some aspects of fire services, land use planning, library services and stormwater management. The letter supported the continuation of a two-tier system, but with a reduction in the overall number of County councillors. The task force explored the concept of elected regional councillors who would be eligible to serve as Warden. The Township of Springwater has also submitted a letter to the provincial government for consideration regarding this topic. The provincial government is expected to report back on what they heard during the consultation period in fall 2019.
Fire Recruitment and Open House: Springwater Fire & Emergency Services is recruiting for Volunteer Firefighters. Areas of recruitment are specifically for the Midhurst, Minesing and Hillsdale stations. Our community relies on brave community members to step up and answer the call to deliver timely emergency response. Visit springwater.ca/careers for details and to apply. Springwater Fire & Emergency Services is also hosting an Open House on June 10 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Township Administration Centre to discuss the past, present and future of fire services in our municipality. Come out to learn the challenges of our current fire department and future needs.
Communications Survey: The Township wants to learn how community members prefer to receive information from the municipality. Complete a survey to tell us how you’d like to be engaged and informed and enter a draw to win a free iPad 6. The survey is available online at surveymonkey.com/r/SpringwaterComms or in person at any Springwater Public Library branch and the Township Administration Centre. The responses from this survey will help guide staff on how and what we communicate to the public. It will also help how we gather input on various projects, so it’s important that we hear from as many people as possible!
Midhurst Cemetery Update: Phase one of construction is underway at the Midhurst Union Cemetery. The replacement of the waterline has been completed and water has been restored. Construction is typically done during the week from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. and is expected to be done by late June. Phase one includes: additional casket burial sites, a cremation garden with two wall columbaria, memorial benches and parking. Access is open to the public. Contractors continue to be respectful of visitation and funeral services.
